Virginia Poverty Law Center Photography Book

VPLC Photography Book 1

The Virginia Poverty Law Center (VPLC) is a not-for-profit organization concentrating in the areas of law that affect low-income families. Established in 1978 to advocate on behalf of low-income Virginians on poverty issues of statewide importance, VPLC is the only state-wide organization providing training to local Legal Aid program staff, private bar attorneys, and low-income clients, relating exclusively to the legal rights of Virginia’s poor.

NOTES
This project represents much of what Sagetopia strives for: a client that seeks to make a positive impact on the community, effortless design, and a locally printed publication. “Through Different Eyes” was a project that allowed us to work with Virginia Poverty Law Center, a group that has been advocating for lower-income Virginians for over 30 years, to create an engaging, provocative experience for the viewer. In addition to being able to work with a local law center, we were able to print the piece locally at ColorCraft.

“Through Different Eyes” documents the juried “Faces of Poverty” photography contest held throughout Virginia in 2005. “Through Different Eyes: The Faces of Poverty In Virginia” has traveled throughout the commonwealth as part of the traveling exhibitions program of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts since 2005. In presenting the competition, the goal of the Virginia Poverty Law Center was – and reamins – to bring attention to the issue of poverty in Virginia. The remarkable images in this book are drawn from the entries.
