NOTES
This project became the culmination of many design elements to create an exciting, engaging way for people to enjoy being thankful during the Thanksgiving holiday. Little did we know this project was going to be filled with subtle, yet perplexing design challenges. From determining how to “put” the feathers on the poster, to finding out how to ship such an item without causing a flurry of stray feathers, we were challenged in such a way that required us to wear a few more hats than the usual design team.
The tradition of the ThanksTurkey began five years ago in a home in Beaverton, Oregon. Lori Bocklund thought of an alternative way to share appreciation and thanks during the Thanksgiving holiday. Too often food gets cold as everyone takes turns sharing their thanks around the table, and people often have difficulty expressing their thanks verbally. Or, people just avoid the whole thing and focus on food and football!
Lori and her husband Mike Mulligan created a hand-illustrated turkey and hung the poster on the back of a door. Their friends and family wrote their thanks on Post-It® notes and placed them on the turkey. The ThanksTurkey was a success and a tradition was born! Year after year, the ThanksTurkey is highly anticipated on Thanksgiving Day.
Their idea of the ThanksTurkey grew and they envisioned how the ThanksTurkey could go beyond one household (that’s where we came in). By making this initiative a non-profit, they found a way that organizations could sell the ThanksTurkey posters and raise funds for their activities.
ThanksTurkey is a non-profit organization. Proceeds above costs go to the Food Bank. Visit their website if you’d like to learn more.
